Some conspiracies turned out to be true. Some fell apart under evidence. Some people are still arguing about. Here’s the board, pins and all.

MKUltra
CIA MIND-CONTROL RESEARCH
THE THEORY
The CIA secretly experimented on people with drugs to try to control the mind.
WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW
It happened. The CIA ran experiments that included giving LSD to people who didn’t know they were being drugged. In 1973 the agency ordered most MKUltra files destroyed, but thousands of misfiled financial records surfaced in 1977 and led to Senate hearings.
The FBI was secretly spying on and sabotaging American political groups.
WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW
True. The FBI surveilled and tried to disrupt activist groups, including civil rights leaders. It came out in 1971 when activists broke into an FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania, and mailed the files to newspapers.
U.S. military leaders planned fake attacks to start a war with Cuba.
WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW
The Joint Chiefs did propose staged “false flag” incidents to justify military action against Cuba. The Kennedy administration rejected the plan. The documents were declassified in 1997.
The attack that pulled the U.S. deeper into the Vietnam War never really happened.
WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW
Partly true. There was a real clash on August 2, but a second reported attack on August 4 most likely never happened. An NSA history declassified in 2005 reached that conclusion. Congress had already used the reports to authorize war.
The Warren Commission (1964) concluded Oswald acted alone. A House committee in 1979 said there was “probably” a conspiracy, based mostly on audio evidence that a National Academy of Sciences panel later challenged. The government released most remaining records in 2017 and 2025.
The government hides alien spacecraft at a secret base in Nevada.
WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW
The base is real. CIA documents released in 2013 confirmed it was built to test the U-2 spy plane, and secret high-altitude test flights explain many UFO reports from that era. There’s no public evidence of aliens there.
Debunked. Astronauts brought back hundreds of kilograms of moon rock, left mirrors that observatories still bounce lasers off today, and NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has photographed the landing sites. The Soviet Union, America’s rival, tracked the missions too.
U.S. intelligence agencies were breaking the law at home and abroad.
WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW
A Senate committee led by Frank Church confirmed it: CIA plots to kill foreign leaders, FBI spying on Americans, and NSA programs that read citizens’ telegrams. Its findings led to permanent intelligence oversight committees.
