THE SUBJECTS

BETTY HILL

  • Social worker from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
  • Kept telling the story publicly for the rest of her life.
  • Died in 2004.

BARNEY HILL

  • Postal worker, and active with Betty in the civil rights movement, including the NAACP.
  • As an interracial couple in the early 1960s, they had a lot to lose by telling a strange story.
  • Died in 1969.

THE TIMELINE

How the night unfolded.

  1. SEPT 19, 1961 · LATE NIGHT

    A light that wouldn’t leave

Driving home from a vacation in Canada along U.S. Route 3, the Hills noticed a bright light in the sky that seemed to follow their car through the mountains near Franconia Notch.

  2. THE SAME NIGHT

    Faces in the windows

Barney stopped and looked at it through binoculars. He said he saw a craft with a row of windows and figures inside watching him. He ran back to the car, and they drove off.

  3. EARLY MORNING, SEPT 20

    The missing time

They got home to Portsmouth about two hours later than they expected and couldn’t explain where the time went. Their watches had stopped, and Betty noticed strange marks on the car.

  4. SEPTEMBER 1961

    Reported to the Air Force

They reported the sighting to nearby Pease Air Force Base, and it was logged by Project Blue Book. Over the following weeks, Betty had vivid nightmares about being taken aboard a craft.

  5. 1964

    Under hypnosis

Still troubled, the couple saw Boston psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon, who hypnotized them separately. Both described being taken aboard a craft and examined by beings with large eyes.

  6. 1965–1966

    The story goes public

A Boston newspaper broke the story in 1965. The next year, writer John G. Fuller told it in the bestselling book The Interrupted Journey.

  7. 1975

    On television

The TV movie The UFO Incident, starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons, brought the case to millions more people.

  8. 2011

    Part of history

New Hampshire placed an official historical marker near where the encounter began. Their papers are now kept at the University of New Hampshire.

EXHIBIT A

The star map.

ILLUSTRATION · NOT THE ORIGINAL DRAWING

Betty said she was shown a “star map” aboard the craft, and she drew it from memory in 1964. In the late 1960s, an Ohio schoolteacher named Marjorie Fish built 3D models of nearby stars and concluded the map matched the twin stars Zeta Reticuli, which made the name famous.

Astronomers point out that with enough stars to choose from, almost any pattern of dots can be matched to something, and later star measurements weakened the fit.

THE VERDICT

Two ways to read it.

WHY BELIEVERS FIND IT CONVINCING

  • Two people told matching stories in separate hypnosis sessions.
  • They reported the sighting to the Air Force right away, years before it was famous.
  • They were respected in their community and had little to gain from going public.
  • The “missing time” was noticed the same night.

WHY SKEPTICS DOUBT IT

  • Memories recovered under hypnosis are known to be unreliable and easy to shape.
  • Dr. Simon himself thought the abduction was most likely a fantasy built from Betty’s dreams, which she had told Barney about.
  • Researchers noted Barney’s description of the beings resembled a TV episode that aired shortly before his session.
  • The light may have been a bright planet or aircraft.

Case status: debated. Whatever happened that night, this case created the template for almost every abduction story that came after: the missing time, the examination, and the beings with big eyes.
